Ear piercing for your child: how it works with the Studex System75, choosing first studs, aftercare and what parents should watch for.

4 min readear piercing · children · guide

Their first earrings are a big moment for many children. For parents, it often raises a few questions: how does the piercing work? Does it hurt? And how do you look after a fresh piercing properly? In this article we explain step by step how ear piercing works at our shop and what you as parents can keep in mind so that the day is relaxed and enjoyable for your child.

The right time

At our shop, children can have their ears pierced from around six months of age, always accompanied by a parent. There is no single "perfect" age, though. What matters far more is that it suits your child and your family.

With older children, it works best when they really want it themselves. A child who is looking forward to their first earrings goes into the appointment far more relaxed. It also helps if they can keep still for a brief moment. Talk calmly beforehand about what will happen, and choose a day when your child is well rested and in a good mood.

Sterile with the Studex System75

We pierce with the medically tested Studex System75. It uses sterile single-use cassettes. Every set is fresh, individually sealed and used only once.

The first stud is inserted without being touched. Before it goes in, it doesn't come into contact with anything. This keeps the piercing site hygienic. The system is hypoallergenic and gentle, which makes it suitable for children too.

How the appointment works

  1. Choosing the studs. First, you and your child pick the first studs together. For many children this is the best part.
  2. Piercing. With the Studex System75, the stud is placed in a brief moment. With children, wherever possible we place both studs quickly one after the other. Most children are surprised at how quickly it is over.
  3. Taking the aftercare home. Finally, we show you step by step how to care for the piercing and give you the right aftercare solution to take home.

We take plenty of time and keep things calm for children. Nobody needs to rush.

Choosing the first studs

You choose the first studs yourself. You can pick from studs made of surgical stainless steel or 24 carat gold plated ones. They come with a sparkling cubic zirconia, a real freshwater pearl or child-friendly shapes such as a heart or a star.

All studs come from the medically tested Studex System75 range and are nickel free. A tip for parents: let your child have a say. Children who have chosen their favourite studs themselves usually enjoy the whole thing even more.

Aftercare in the first weeks

The time after piercing is important so that the ear can heal well. Here is what to do:

  • Clean the piercing site morning and evening during the first weeks with the aftercare solution we give you.
  • Gently turn the stud while doing so.
  • Wash your hands first, and otherwise touch the piercing as little as possible.
  • Make sure hair, hats or jumpers don't catch on the stud.

Children love to touch their new earrings. Explain to your child in a way they understand why they should leave their ears alone for a while.

When can the studs be changed?

The earlobe has usually healed after around six weeks. Until then, the first stud should stay in. Cartilage and nose piercings take longer.

After that, your child can switch to other earrings. Light studs are comfortable to begin with. If you are unsure whether the piercing is ready, we are happy to take a look in the shop.

What parents should watch for

A freshly pierced ear may feel a little sensitive for the first few days. However, if the area becomes very red, swollen, warm, painful or starts to weep, please see your paediatrician. A medical assessment is the right step in that case.

As well as ear piercing, we also offer discreet nose piercings, likewise with a sterile system.
