Investment gold is one of the oldest ways to preserve value. First-time buyers usually face a few questions: which size, which certificate, how to store it? Here are the key points.
Minted or cast?
Minted bars have a smooth, even surface and usually come in a sealed card. Cast bars look more rustic and often carry a slightly lower premium at larger weights. Only the fine gold content matters for the value.
The right size
Smaller units (1 g to 20 g) are flexible and can be sold individually later, but carry a higher premium per gram. Larger bars (100 g, 250 g, 1 kg) are cheaper in relation yet less divisible. A mix is often sensible.
Certificate and authenticity
Look for LBMA Good Delivery and an enclosed certificate of authenticity with a serial number. Ideally check sealed bars only at resale, together with the dealer, so the seal stays intact.
Storing safely
At home a firmly anchored safe works well, or a bank safe deposit box. Keep the receipt and certificate separate from the bar. A photo record is helpful for insurance.
