A diamond is graded by four characteristics, the so called 4 Cs. Knowing them helps you make a deliberate choice instead of looking at the price alone.
Cut
The cut determines how strongly a diamond sparkles. It is the only one of the four criteria shaped by human hands. An excellent cut makes even a smaller stone come alive, while a poor cut leaves even a large diamond looking dull.
Colour
The colour scale runs from D (exceptional white) to Z (noticeably tinted). For most jewellery the nicest balance of price and effect sits around G to H, a near colourless white that is hard to tell apart from the most expensive grade once set in a ring.
Clarity
Almost every diamond has tiny inclusions. The scale runs from flawless (FL/IF) to inclusions visible to the naked eye (I). In the VS to SI range inclusions are invisible to the eye and the value for money is excellent.
Carat
One carat equals 0.2 grams. Because larger stones are rarer, the price per carat rises disproportionately. A diamond just below a round carat mark often looks almost the same size yet costs noticeably less.
