Caring for jewellery · tips from your jeweller

How to gently clean gold, silver and gemstones at home, and when a visit to the jeweller makes sense.

Gold, silver and gemstones stay beautiful for a long time with little effort. Here are the most important tips you can follow at home, plus a note on when a visit to the jeweller makes sense.

Gold and platinum

A lukewarm bath with a little mild washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush dissolve skin oils and cream residue. Rinse with clear water afterwards and pat dry with a soft cloth.

Silver

Silver tarnishes over time. A dedicated silver polishing cloth gently brings back the shine. It is better to avoid toothpaste or home remedies, as they can scratch the surface.

Gemstones and pearls

Diamonds tolerate the lukewarm bath well. Clean sensitive stones such as opal, emerald or pearls only with a slightly damp cloth, never in an ultrasonic bath.

Storing correctly

Store jewellery separately so that harder stones do not scratch softer ones. A compartment with a soft lining is ideal.

When to see the jeweller

Have settings and clasps checked about once a year so loose stones do not fall out unnoticed. We are happy to offer this check along with a professional cleaning.
